Firside chat : From Science to Startup
From Science to Startup
"In order to do real good, across the board to me, that is what you want to see your companies do. That's why we not only do things at MIT. This is also why we want to start these companies so that we can help the world", Professor Robert Langer ( MIT, Moderna ) replied when he was asked what led him to be starting Moderna.
What a way to start the Fireside Chat: From Science to Startup at the MIT Future of Healthcare and Medicine last week. Prof Langer's deep desire in making an impact through science is truly inspiring.
When asked about what advice he will give to the young researchers who are launching their academic careers, Prof Langer advised them to "think big and asked big questions", which can lead to great scientific discoveries and technological advances.
While technologies are critical to the success of his biotech startups, Prof Langer also credited his success to having great business partners such as Noubar Afeyan ( Flagship Pioneering, investor/co-founder of Moderna ) and Stephane Bancel ( CEO of Moderna ).
Finally, Dr. Afeyan outlined his vision in preventive healthcare which includes pre-treatments for pre-diseases that delay the pre-patient journey, which ultimately can significantly reduce healthcare costs.
What an incredible interview! It is indeed why Milad and I started Good AI. It is our vision to seek out mission-driven scientists and entrepreneurs who are tackling very acute problems. As a great business partner, Good AI aims to be part of its journeys in transforming the world.
Speaking of Great Partnerships
I want to thank the leadership team at the MIT event ( Daniel Oreper, Greg Wolff, Christian Ulstrup, Christopher Leiter ) for inviting me. As somebody who doesn't have a medical/scientific background, I can hardly imagine that I can speak in the event among all the industry leaders and luminaries.
Truly humbled, I look forward to forging a further partnership with the MIT community and beyond.
